How to Effectively use Facebook to build your business

Boredom.  For most of us it plagues our lives.  Though to avoid depression we refuse to admit it, most of us live relatively boring lives with brief moments of levity and excitement breaking up the monotony. Social Networking, if used properly allows us to see those moments in other peoples lives giving us more entertainment and less monotony.  For me, about 85% of my day seems like I have done it before.  My moments of levity normally come in the form of a good joke, or an awkward moment, or maybe even some type of game in which the primary gear is made up of office supplies.  Who hasn’t made a paper football and tried to kick it through a finger goalpost.

The mistake most small business owners make with their Facebook pages is an over emphasis on the boring aspects of their companies and an underemphasis on why they go to work every day.  Those of us that are optimist work hard when we need to and take the time to enjoy the little fun moments when they peak out.  As a Social Networking Site, most of us go on Facebook to peak into our friends lives and see what they are up to.  If you make the updates at your business fun and interesting, more people will read them and not “hide” you in their feed.  Don’t get me wrong, the idea of the page is to market your business both by creating a loyalty and producing refferals from current clients.  Promotional post are definitely  effective, but only after a fun and reciprocal re-pore have been created with your followers.  The more you respond to your clients post, the more influence you will gain in the networks.

Social Networking is a beautiful example of Karma, the more positive you put out there on the networks, the more influence and effectiveness you develop in your marketing campaigns.

Help me break up the Monotony of my day by joining my social networks:

Welcome to Performance Media Placement

What are you looking for in an ad-word manager?

There are three basic aspects that need to be included in a marketing campaign in order to ensure success.

  1. Exposure- Your message has to be where your potential clients are looking
  2. Enticement- Your message has to entice your potential customers to take action
  3. Consistency- Your message has to be branded.

Recently, I started working with a company called Performance Media Placement, and I have to tell you that these guys are the best ad-word management company on the market.  They guarantee 24/7 1st page ad placement in the sponsored links section of Google.com for a minimal monthly fee.

How I wasted the last three years of my Life

How many countless hours have you spend going over your website and creating countless keywords and phrases?  Creating and submitting sitemaps, and throwing back links around like crazy.  The amount of work that goes in to optimize websites on the internet is matched only by the work of Google trying to change the algorithms of the search engines to make search engine optimization less predictable.  This is a simple capitalist concept, and one that has built an enormous mega-corp that is influencing the evolution of us as a species.   Because most small business owners have a reasonably high level of intelligence, they understand that society has moved over into the digital world and in order to survive we must take our advertising dollars from conventional print media and invest it into the web based media.  As Google has become the king of search engines, it has created a community that has engulfed all of mankind.  People find information on Google.com.  That is all their is to it.  I don’t care if you love yahoo.com, ask.com, bing.com, or whatever, no one ever says, “did you yahoo that?” Google has taken over such a large share of the market, any analyst worth his salt would tell you it would be crazy to spend the majority of your advertising dollars on another search engine.  Its kind of like why Apple computers rarely get viruses, why would they, they hold such a small percentage of the market share, that hackers prefer not to waste their time.

The problem small businesses run into when trying to advertise online is honestly the amount of choices.  There is so much nonsense going around on the internet, that its almost impossible to really know who is telling the truth and who is lying.  When I was running Advance Dental Art, I would get 5 calls a day from different online directories that wanted me to advertise with them.  Unfortunately, at the time I did not know what I know now and I spent a ton of money for minimal results.  I spent 3 years studying SEO concepts, reading countless blogs, researching everything I could.  My evenings were spent in front of the TV with my laptop creating profiles in countless directories.  I paid to in dentist directories like 1-800 Dentist, and the dental expo.com.  (Its really kind of absurd when you step back and realize you are paying to be on a directory in a larger directory)  At the end of those three years, it really started to pay off, I was getting between 35-40 new patients a month from my website, and the office was really growing.

Today I started a new job and learned how I just wasted the last three years of my life spending any time working on “Search Engine Optimization!”   Why was I paying all of these random companies to be in their directories, just so I could be found when 80% of all people are finding their services on Google.  Now for the other chunk of time and money I was wasting, because of my work online, I considered myself pretty savvy and started actually advertising on Google.  I know it sounds like I just did a 180 there, but here me out.  I was managing my ad word campaign and was getting a pretty good ROI, I was spending about $650 a month and based on my analysis, I was converting about 25 active patients per month.  Please understand, I am charming and my conversion rate is higher than your average receptionist, but even so it would be pretty safe to assume at least 15 no matter who was answering phones.  With the average annual value of a patient being $462 the ROI on these campaigns broke down as follows:

ROI=[($83,160-$7800)/$7800)]*100= 966.15

Obviously this is better than you will find with almost any sort of marketing program, but its not really accurate, because it does not account for my time.  Like most small business owners, I tend to fail to see the value of my own time.  If I include the $30,000 that I would have been paid were I to bill myself for the hours I spent managing my keyword campaigns, the formula would look a bit more like this,

ROI=[($83,160-$37,800)/$37,800)]*100= 120

Probably the more accurate number, and in terms of advertising, still a decent campaign.  I am a thirty year old man, relatively young in the dental field, and certainly more web savvy than most dentist, and I only developed an ad campaign with a 120 ROI.  Today, I found what I have needed for the last 3 years without even knowing it.  Based on previous experience, I understand you need 3 things to successfully advertise on the internet.  Your greatest return on your investment is NOT going to come from your website, its not going to come from any directory, it comes from insuring these three things.

  1. You have to be on the front page of Google.com!
  2. You have to be on that page 24/7 no matter what!
  3. You have to be on that page for ANY keywords that people will use to find your type of Business.

No matter who you advertise with, everyone agrees that if you accomplish these three things, and provide a quality local product or service that people are actually looking for ie., plumbers, dentist, contractors, real estate agents, etc., you will be successful.  To be honest its really impossible not to.  The company that I am working for can guarantee all three results and the part that is so brilliant, it is for a flat fee and is completely turnkey.

Today I reviewed numbers for current clients of my new company, PMP, and I found a dentist about thirty miles from where my office was.  This dentist started with his campaign through PMP back in august of ’07, he paid a set up fee of $1,500, about half of what I paid for my website, and he was paying a fixed rate of $589 per month for this unlimited keyword campaign.  In 2009, last year, he averaged 42 new patients per month from Google, and he didn’t even have a website!  PMP does a landing page directly connected to the ad on Google that has most of the pertinent information about the office, but that is it.  He never had to work with any keywords, he has been getting all of them free for the last 2 years, and his phone is ringing off the hook.  I am telling you, these are sponsored links with unlimited keywords at the top of the primary way people find their dentist 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

The depressing part of the entire thing, is even after all three years of my back breaking work, this guy did better than I did for less that I spend on a quarter page ad in the local newspaper (only 57,000 in circulation) which only gave me 3 patients a month on average.  The ROI formula looks like this

ROI=[($232,848-$7068)/$7068)]*100= 3194.40

3194.40, that is just crazy!  That is three times what I did and he didn’t have to do a thing.  If you are finding this difficult to believe, I completely understand.  I had a really hard time as well.  I swear its the truth and I will prove it.  Call me at (949) 859-1874 x110 and I will show you.  You have to spend money to advertise your business.  Please call me, I can help you get more of a return on your investment than you can imagine!

Why Social Media Marketing is a must for small business.

As I grow my network and read about how companies are using social networking, I amgetting more and more excited about the capabilities that social media offers not just companies but consumers as well.  This last weekend, my girlfriend and I went to a friends wedding in San Diego and while I was their, I started playing with a relatively new social media platform called four square.  When we checked in to the hotel, I pulled it up on my phone, read tips on the best parts of the hotel and skimmed through a bunch of reviews.  I then pulled up the restaurant where the wedding was being held read comments from staff, and customers, reviewed the menu and saw pictures.  While the girls were getting their hair and makeup done, I searched for the nearest movie theater, found the showtimes of the movie I wanted to see (the new Adam Sandler Flick, Grown-ups) read the critics ratings and navigated to the theater.

The creation of social media networking, and its integration with the GPS technology of smartphones and the Android and I-phone platforms allows us as consumers the ability to be a local no matter where we find ourselves.  Small “Mom and Pop” businesses can compete on a very real level with the captains of industry, by keeping a finger on the pulse of their customer base and ensuring that the level of customer service stays personal and intimate.  The word of mouth referral network has never been easier to promote or more effectively established.

The way that we communicate and find products is evolving.  We can share our collectively experiences as a community and create a free market where quality, service, and positive experiences set apart businesses based on individual service.  As companies we get instant feedback and can use that to better ourselves and our business, and as consumers we are introduced to places and products by people we like and trust.

Personal Orientation Profile 7.0 Personal Strengths/Career Needs

In Terms of Enterprising vs Support Role Possibilities
You would be described as extremely competitive, enterprising, assertive, aggressive, tough minded, determined and goal oriented. You may display new and creative ways to reach your personal and work objectives and you will be self-evaluative and sometimes critical of your own performance. Given an aim, objective or requirement, you would be able to develop your own plan, manage your time and focus your effort on a daily basis to reach your goals. Being a self-manager should come very naturally to you and these skills should be refined through formal training and/or on-the-job experience.

In Terms of Your Style & Strength of Various Motivations
People would describe you as being very calm, steady, unhurried, stable, dependable and cooperative. They would see you as motivated by a deep and essentially selfless concern for the well-being and the needs of others. In your career development, you would find that your greatest satisfactions and best personal productivity would come from being able to commit your effort, within a ‘people oriented’ organization, to the achievement of longer term goals which are clearly related to alleviating distress or improving the quality of life of the recipients of the product or service.

In Terms of Your Independence vs Your Need to Be in the ‘Team’
You would be described as quite cooperative, obliging, efficient, conscientious, painstaking and team oriented. Generally, you would be easy on others and quite accepting of supervision. You would be a good company person working well within a variety of group settings. Security and stability would be valued working conditions desired in the job.

In Terms of Your Orientation Towards the ‘People’ Side of Business
You would be described as extremely sociable, entertaining, cheerful, genial and outgoing. In addition to being a fluent talker, you would be comfortable with new people, value social interaction and make new friends easily. Generally, you would be a good company representative and have the ability to communicate with a wide variety of people in a number of different functions. Being extremely sociable could make you somewhat sensitive to rejection.

In Terms of Your Orientation Towards Technical & Practical Concerns
You would be described as somewhat logical, reflective, analytical, factual and practical. Intellectual challenges, when offered just as challenges without any obvious practical utility, would not appeal to you as strongly as would other kinds of challenges and opportunities. Ideas and concepts which were of solid practical use would be of interest to you.

Personal Orientation Profile 7.0 What To Seek/What To Avoid In Jobs

What Should You Look for In a Job/Career that Matches You Best?
+ Look for opportunities to create your own work structure and to develop your self-management skills by training in time management and activity planning. The opportunity to put solid effort into the job each day is a real plus for you as you know that effort invested consistently will produce the results you seek in both productivity and recognition.

+ It is important for you that you find a career position which allows you to focus your talents and your energies on products or services which you are convinced have real merit in improving the life of the people who receive them.

+ You should look for a job that is stable in an established work environment. Your preference should be to work within a recognized team type situation. For even greater job satisfaction, you should find a company that you can identify with and respect for their products and services.

+ Look for employment that provides you with lots of people contact on a daily basis. A job with a great deal of person to person interaction and public relations opportunities would be ideal for you.

+ Look for employment that has a limited amount of analytical, technical and discovery learning to it. There are other challenges and rewards in the work environment which are more appealing to you. When you discover these, target them as ideal job requirements/opportunities.

What Should You Avoid in Jobs/Careers that Don’t Match You?
- Avoid tightly and rigidly structured work situations. If there is no room to put your personal touch to work in organizing and managing yourself, the job may become too constricting for you. Try to avoid jobs that may limit your self-management skills development which is a very strong need in you for your personal productivity and your sense of satisfaction with any job.

- Avoid positions which are simply money oriented and which have no demonstrable worthwhile impact on the lives of the people who receive the product or services.

- Avoid work environments which have poor supervision or very inexperienced supervisors and those positions that demand an intense level of independence and/or a high demand to work essentially on your own all of the time.

- You should avoid employment that would isolate you from people. A job that lacks social interaction would not be adequately stimulating and rewarding to you.

- Avoid jobs that are particularly detail oriented. Jobs that require you to quickly learn and apply new technologies or vast amounts of new information won’t be particularly satisfying.

Web Design Process

Web Design Process

Designing a web site is a process consisting of six phases:

  1. Project Definition

  • Call to action and get immediate response Exposed media solutions can send and track specific campaigns. You can schedule email delivery to your customers when your audience is most likely to check email, so you’ll increase the likelihood they’ll read it, keep it, and take action.
  • Keep track of who reads and what they respond to. See who is opening and reading your emails, who is sending and forwarding them to their friends.  We keep track of and even who opened which links in your emails so you know what gets the best response and what you need to resend.
